Being Authentically and Unapologetically You Through Counselling in Wilmslow

As a 47 year old providing counselling in Wilmslow, I am still learning what it truly means to become my authentic self.

For more than 25 years, I coloured the front of my hair to hide the natural blonde-white streak that had always been part of me. Over time, I realised it was never really about my hair at all. It was about hiding the parts of myself that I had quietly learned were “too different,” too noticeable, or somehow not acceptable.

My hair made me stand out. People commented on it. They stared. And somewhere along the way, I began believing that blending in felt safer than fully being myself.

Now, as founder of Ida Therapy Counselling in Wilmslow, I spend so much of my work supporting people to reconnect with who they truly are beneath the layers of expectation, perfectionism, fear, and self-protection. In therapy sessions, I encourage clients to explore themselves honestly, with compassion and without judgement — to feel heard, seen, and valued for exactly who they are.

Recently, I realised I needed to continue walking that path myself too.

So, I stopped covering the streak.

I spoke with my fabulous hairdresser, who encouraged me to embrace it and begin loving it again. Taking that step felt surprisingly brave. Yet somewhere within that decision, I found a deeper sense of freedom, confidence, and self-acceptance.

There is something incredibly healing about letting go of the pressure to present a perfected version of yourself to the world. The more I allow myself to simply be — naturally, honestly, imperfectly — the lighter I feel.

Authenticity is not about becoming someone different. It is about returning home to yourself.

For me, this journey has meant embracing my natural hair, honouring my emotions more honestly, setting healthier boundaries, and learning that ageing is not something to fear or hide from. There is real beauty in becoming more of who you truly are.

At Ida Therapy, I often remind clients that healing does not mean becoming perfect. It means creating space to understand yourself more deeply, to build self-awareness, and to feel safe enough to live more authentically. Whether someone is struggling with anxiety, confidence, relationships, grief, neurodiversity, or simply feeling lost within themselves, therapy can offer a supportive space to reconnect with who they are underneath it all.

And truthfully?

I have never felt more comfortable in my own skin.
